I keep seeing ppl on tiktok finally complaining about conservatives and bigots in the alternative scene… here’s the thing. They were always there. Quite literally the first time I was called the n word was by another alt girl.

I wouldn't say always but it definitely came when people started making the subcultures more about aesthetic than ideals/culture. Like capitalist calling themselves punk cuz they wear little anarchy patch 🤣

No, conservatives/bigots have always been in those spaces just quietly. Some of the most racist people I’ve met were also alternative. People just overlook POC when they raise concern about these kinds of people and brush it off or think we’re being hypersensitive

I know but I'm referring to the birth of these communities like before we were even born. Racist have always been around but certain alternative subcultures are built on the ideals of anti establishment, anti racism, anti homophobia, anti bigotry period. In our lifetime yes I agree they've always been around but I don't necessarily agree with the idea that they've always been around. Like to be punk was to be anti racism.

Like I don't deny that we're often ignored when we bring up issues of racism but I also feel like to say that they've always been bigoted erases a lot of POC especially black alt history especially in the punk space

I never said anything about how these cultures are established. I’m just saying these bigots have always been in these spaces quietly. I’m not saying every alt person is a bigot either. But it’s dishonest to say they weren’t ever there at all. They’ve always been there

I know you're not saying every alt person is a bigot I'm saying if something is established on anti bigotry then it's not true to say bigots were ALWAYS in the space. I never even disagreed with the idea that that prevalent I'm saying they go against the ideals that some of these subcultures were founded on and don't belong here
