Why is everyone taking personal offense to Juneteenth? Can’t we all just agree that it’s something that should be celebrated and not make it all about ourselves?

People that get offended by others celebrating Juneteenth are the reason why we need to continue celebrating it.

I thought about it theres nothing better it celebrate. We are celebrating liberation of the country with expanded freedoms and liberties. We are still stamping out the shitty white culture brought from Europe in 1620.

I’m just disappointed that it’s a holiday that everyone celebrates now. It used to be Black block parties and now Walmart is selling Juneteenth ice cream and non blacks are gentrifying it. Something’s need to be gatekept much better

Tbh this country has far too many holidays imo. Not saying this one is any more or less important but as a whole? Seems like every other Monday is some holiday that no one really cares about beyond getting a free day off. Soon we’ll be celebrating Celery Day. Not saying this one isnt a good thing, just thinking there are too many overall.

I think it helps when you take into account that this was a day celebrated before the government decided to recognize it. Like it didn’t pop up out of nowhere, but when the government recognizes it — ofc companies and such are gonna commercialize it some kind of way

Well you’ve got the different styles of cookouts, different styles of art, classical music (although I’d say that’s mostly older since modern is inspired by a wide mix of cultures and not just European,,the tradition of hunting trips in some more rural areas (I’m sure there’s non white people who do this too but I’ve seen a lot more white people do it than not), different hairstyles and clothing styles, etc

Dawg it has nothing to do with racism you can save your folder of buzzword posters for another dumber person who will curse at you and make you feel good instead of presenting a valid point. EVERY human on earth has a culture tied to their origins. Denying that is pure ignorance

Black culture doesn’t just include remnants from African cultures because not all Black people are from Africa. Slavery wasn’t the only attempt to deny cultural connection but it was quite a large push. We still have Black culture being ignored and appropriated.

So because it exists, it doesn’t exist? What you’re saying makes no sense. Whether someone can trace their ancestry or not doesn’t define whether or not they have culture lol. It’s so much more nuanced than saying something is just “black culture”, “European culture”, or “American culture”. There’s HUNDREDS of groups in regional areas with very distinct culture. Hell, every major city in the US and even every state or county has its own culture sometimes

It absolutely does relate to racism. Black culture exists *despite* racism and the attempts to take everything from them. I don’t have hardly any access to my Native ancestry because of, you guessed it, racism. I’m lucky I even know about it. I have that fortune. Very few people do. Black people have had that taken from them for centuries.

Well yeah black culture in the US developed due to slavery. Just because a culture didn’t form out of slavery doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist that just doesn’t make sense

How am I strawmanning? You said “give me examples of white culture” when I said “white and black culture can coexist”. I gave you some examples. Then you go off saying I’m trying to put down black culture and deny its roots by saying that. You’re putting words in my mouth

Explain to me how it’s not white culture. The people I listed were white, created by white people in regions inhabited by white people, and white people continue to partake in those activities more than every other group. How is that not white culture? That’s like saying black culture isn’t black because people who aren’t black try to partake in it too

Yes brother of course they don’t all share one culture but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. This example is kinda silly but I’m gonna make it anyway. You know how people say white people are bad at seasoning food? Technically that’s white culture. Asian kids joking about (or not 💀) being beat with a spatula or having a shoe thrown at them by their moms? Technically Asian culture since it’s a commonly shared experience. Same with black culture. Slavery was unfortunately a commonly share-

-shared experience that led to black culture developing into what it is today. The same thing can be said about what white people experience too even though yes they are fortunate that it wasn’t from slavery. Any commonly shared custom or experience is what creates a culture. That’s literally the definition of it. If you disagree with that idk what else to tell you since you’re arguing with the literal dictionary definition of what culture is
