The hardline faith I grew up with never brought me "closer to God" and on the contrary masturbation helped me a lot. I discovered it a bit older at a time of great mental crisis and it was a nice diversion. Interesting to hear though as a male that females struggle with masturbatory urge (typically don't hear of it)
