I work at a school for troubled kids as a therapist 🥲 everyone always says my job is so important and I’m doing the community a service but when it comes to funding suddenly it’s crickets. Don’t get me wrong I love my job but it’s so painful I make less than gas station workers

Psychology, I’m an in-classroom therapist at a partial hospitalization school. Basically kids that are either suicidal, violent, or special needs

The job comes with the warning that you may be punched, kicked, bitten, spit on, peed on, or otherwise harmed. I kinda wish for that big of a daily risk I made a little more

I have relatives(2) that both do that job as well. I figure the reason the pay is so low is because you have an incredibly oversaturated degree, 5.7% of the awarded degrees in 2024-25, plus unions have been sufficiently busted.

For reference that means ~1 in 20 degrees awarded were psychology. Which is HUGE if you realize that we get more and more college graduates every single year. Plus if I’m being completely candid I don’t really know what a psychology major does outside of school therapist, therapist, etc and none of those are paid well.

It’s also because our school is severely underfunded. We have to buy all school supplies ourselves, the gym is the same room as the cafeteria, there’s only like 3 textbooks per classroom, and the poor kids get fed food I wouldn’t even give to my dog 🥲 and the building is like literally falling apart, the ceiling in my classroom is currently collapsed

That is horrible. This is why property taxes shouldn’t be used for funding schools it’s quite literally born rich stay rich tactics.
