Anyone else wonder about like mental illnesses or disorders and where the line is? Idk why this has always fascinated me. How can we equivocally diagnose someone with something like anxiety. Where is the line between anxiety and just “feeling anxious.”

Not dismissing any diagnoses btw, fully believe in them. Just something to think about

it mostly relies on how long you’ve been experiencing the symptoms. for example you could be feeling depressed for a couple weeks, but if it still persists after months and months you probably have depression

diagnoses are based on if whatever it is interferes with your ability to function or not. often you have to experience the symptoms before a certain period in your life (like adolescence) or for a certain amount of time (usually 6mo)

Okay but how many people are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed due to a non-concrete method of diagnosis? Being diagnosed is mostly all reliant on conveying symptoms that cannot be measured by standard or concrete tests

we do not understand the brain or mental health conditions fully yet. science is what we know so far, and it’s still very limited. i do agree that the process of diagnosis, especially for mental health conditions, is entirely too subjective. but we don’t know enough yet to make objective tests for them

this is why racism and ableism is a huge problem in the medical field. drs think they know more than people experiencing their own body. even though all the science we have so far has come from listening to people and noticing patterns! diagnosis are constantly changing. it’s all made up. homosexuality used to be in the DSM

anxiety and depression are classified as disorders but just about every single mental and physical health condition lists anxiety and depression as symptoms.
