The amount of false accusations is grossly overestimated due to the publicity of celebrities being falsely accused for attention. Unless the accused is a celebrity, or the alleged victim harbors a known grudge against the accused, we should always believe victims until proven otherwise.

You want the actual numbers? Out of a 10-year study of 136 cases reported in a university, only 8 (5.9%) were labeled as false allegations due to lack of evidence. Taken from the NSVC. Similar studies show ranges from 2% to 10%. You think anyone *wants* to come forward and say they were raped? It’s something many people would feel ashamed of and blame themselves for.

Alright, maybe I spoke too strongly with guilty until proven innocent (I feel very strongly about this issue sorry), but does that mean we should go full innocent until proven guilty? Shouldn’t people’s testimonies count for something? They count for something in court. We shouldn’t belittle victims and accuse them of making stuff up for attention just because it means that like one of our friends turns out to maybe be a horrible person.

I’m just saying it’s more understandable that false allegations would be made against a celebrity because it’s a way for someone to attract attention since so many people care about the lives of celebrities.

If only 6% of cases turn out to be false, should our first instinct when someone opens up about being raped be to tell them they’re making it up for attention? Especially when it’s someone close to us?

I’m just looking at it from a logical point of view. There’s a clear motive to lie right there. And while there are many horrible famous people on the Epstein list, there are also a lot of publicized cases of allegations against celebrities being faked.

If someone in my community comes out against someone else in the community, I’m not going to tell them “I’m gonna wait to hear their side of the story,” they need to be supported right away; they just went through something traumatic and not offering your support right away could feel like betrayal to them. If evidence comes out to prove they were incorrect, then I’d change my opinion.

What is supporting victims if not believing their stories? Besides, was the streamer you mentioned who accused someone actually raped by that person? No, I’m guessing they were likely baiting people into talking with them and disguising themselves as a kid online or something. That’s a different situation than someone who was raped and then came forward about it later because they weren’t trying to bait people, they were just assaulted.

I do agree that the accusation ruins careers and shouldn’t be thrown around lightly. While that is the case, that doesn’t mean that the victims should just be guilty (of lying) until proven innocent.

So if a friend comes out to you about being raped you just say “I’m not really sure what to think about your story but I’m here for you?” Don’t you think they’d feel at least a little bit betrayed by that?

I think if a rape accusation is thrown in my local community instead of a vast space like the internet that doesn’t show the whole story, I know my local community enough to cast a pretty confident judgement right away until proven otherwise.

If my friend tells me my dad made advances towards them, and I know my friend would never lie and they seem really upset, yes I would suspect my dad. If my friend tends to like the spotlight a lil too much, and I know my dad is happily married and very much in love with someone else, I’d believe my dad. I told you already I may have been too hasty with the “guilty until proven innocent” comment, but like I said I still believe I know my local community enough to cast judgement right away.
