As a teen my bff and I went to a holiday gathering (she already knew but assumed I was exaggerating and insisted on coming) and we ended up leaving halfway through dinner because the hateful rhetoric was too much and it overwhelmed her. I don’t talk to my family much anymore but if it comes up in conversation it’s one of the first reasons I give, otherwise they insist I make amends.
