It’s not literal. Women usually use it as a euphemism for wanting to break up or to try to ease out of the relationship.

def not true, but regardless a partner should be able to notice when his girlfriend/wife needs some space, and he should be able to take that step back to reflect and let everyone breathe. idk who hurt you, or what you grew up watching, but I can solemnly swear to you that taking women at more than face value is, not only the rational, human thing to wanna do, but also exactly what you need to do.
