I unironically think we should just throw out Greek life as a concept and I believe any school would be significantly improved by getting rid of all of it

the amount of frat guys that assault women AND men through parties/hazing is enough of a reason to get rid of it. nothing good comes from having men like that around each other all the time

As a transfer student I’ve been with and without greeklife and I strongly prefer with. I think the option should be there for those who choose to do it and those who don’t want to don’t have to

It pretty much flies in the face of the whole 'diversity and inclusion' stuff universities say they care about

I just feel like Greek life siphons so much money away from better stuff. All Greek life really provides is a weird sense of division between different orgs even though they're literally all the same and a sort of superiority complex on every single person that's in one. Like I genuinely do not understand the point of it. Anything Greek life provides can be done in much more accessible ways so it just straight up doesn't have a point to me

I mean if you aren’t in Greek life it’s not taking your money plus they do philanthropy so it’s not like it’s not for a good cause plus having some fun and I mean there are going to be superiority complexes with everything it’s the real world. I like it I’m glad it’s around

Okay but in order to have that "fun" you have to pay a shit ton of money and sometimes go through actual physical and mental torture to be accepted into a group of people that might not even like you all that much. Also the "fun" in question is readily available to non-Greeks??? You don't have to be Greek to go to a party? The whole thing seems like such a waste of time like what does Greek life SPECIFICALLY offer that cannot be obtained any other way? Hazing? That's all I can think of

But like other clubs/groups do philanthropy and they don't get in trouble for sexual assault and/or drug overdose and/or hazing literally all the time. Greek life brings so many issues it is just straight up not worth it

I just don't think we should have groups that exist for the sole purpose of doing crazy stupid dangerous shit on our campuses 🤷‍♂️ go skydiving or something damn

I don’t think we should be telling people what to do unless it affects others. They know what they’re signing up for

But it does affect others. That's my point. People get sexually and physically assaulted at Greek events all the time and nobody ever gaf. People get hazed and literally die from it and nobody cares. I don't think we should be letting people sign up for what's basically the "bully the fuck out of everybody and constantly hey in trouble for heinous shit but sometimes you get to go to a party" club

I didn’t have to go through any mental torture to join. Hazing is illegal all they had me do to get in was trying to put our flag at the highest point in the city and whoever won got a gift basket lmao. Also if you think it’s a waste of money YOU don’t be a part of it I feel like I’ve gotten my moneys worth out of it. What you are talking about with Greek life is the shit that is specifically not allowed and not encouraged to be done the stereotypical hazing isn’t as common as you think.

Nah that’s bullshit and you know it. People get assaulted and spiked all over the world. If there wasn’t Greek life the predators would just go somewhere else. And orgs get shutdown for hazing gone wrong. If nobody cared, you wouldn’t know about it

Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Hazing is illegal, yes, but it is so incredibly easy to not get reported for it unless you genuinely kill someone. Not to mention the other crimes I've already brung up like sexual assault, physical assault, drug abuse, etc. I understand that it's not allowed but that has literally never stopped anyone from doing anything ever since there's pretty much no punishment for it.

You absolutely cannot deny that there is a problem with assault in Greek life just because it happens in other places. Literally what?

Obviously that’s not true. Why do you have frats? Is it some misplaced sense of “greater good” or are you just hating from the outside?

Never said it didn’t happen! But I’m saying it’s not as common as you think and also regardless sexual assault would happen with our without greeklife? Parties happen no matter what rapists will always be rapist sexual assault doesn’t get created by Greek life.

I understand that Greek life didn't create the concept of sexual assault, yes. I don't know what kind of perfect fairytale school you go to, but every single time a major Greek event happens there are reports of people getting assaulted. Every single time without fail. Greek life didn't create sexual assault but it sure as hell does make it much easier for it to happen. There's a lot of weird rapey culture that surrounds a lot of frats and even sororities. It's just true.

I never said it would. But it happens much more often in most Greek life adjacent events. It's literally just true I don't know what to tell you.

That is an outright lie lmao every single Greek event?? You do realize Greek orgs hold more things than parties? You think sororities are getting assaulted during a make a wish event at a children’s hospital. Now you are over generalizing. Now I will agree that parties are a much easier place for assault to happen due to their being more people being drunk and having that have a lessened sense of control as in safety. But parties still happen.

So nobody should go out and party ever we should all just stay home because bad things happen

You seriously think removing Greek life as a whole would stop all sense of elitism and issues? Get real another system of clubs would just start up because people want a sense of belonging to something and there will always be rich kids making things exclusive. Your naive to think otherwise

I literally never said that removing Greek life would solve every problem completely but it would absolutely help to make some of these problems a little better because these problems are so deeply ingrained with Greek Life specifically please read what I'm typing 😭😭😭😭😭

If Greek life didn’t throw parties, someone else would throw parties, and people would get assaulted at THOSE parties. This solves nothing

Anonymous replying to -> #1 1d

Every single Greek life event *at my school. All I'm really saying is that Greek life invites sexual assault on campuses. They throw most of the parties (which you admit are a frequent setting for assault) and due to most organizations' reluctance to report incidents like that due to getting in trouble, they're an incredibly common place to become a victim of assault. Less Greek life = less random ass parties where bad shit doesn't get reported = less sexual assault. Period.

So in other words, nobody should party because bad things happen. That’s what your argument whittles down to you can split hairs all you want

Okay read what I’m typing? Some other club and organization would have the same exact thing repeated all over these issues didn’t start with Greek life and it wouldn’t end with them either. I think what’s best for you is to stay away from Greek life as a whole since it will not be going away any time soon and it bothers you so bad

Anonymous replying to -> #1 1d

Okay then when those new organizations do the same shit we get rid of them too. Easy peasy. Like just because something else will come to replace it doesn't make it any less bad??? What is your point??? 😭

The problem isn’t the parties it’s the rapists. That is like saying “oh you left your house unlocked so now you are inviting robbers” there will always be robbers like there will always be rapists this is such a naive point of you college students will always party even if you get rid of Greek life

The Problem Is That Shit Happens At Greek Parties Specifically That Nobody Wants To Report Because If They Do Their Organization Will Be In Trouble And Therefore Greek Parties Are Often More Dangerous Than Non-Greek Gatherings Oh My God How Many Times Do I Need To Say This 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
