The institution would rather they kill and maim than expose themselves by doing their job in the spirit of the vows they take & it will encourage them to become the kind of people that will oppress, intimidate, & injure in the name of order. Worst of all, it will protect those who *like* to oppress & intimidate, and weed out the ones that would pursue peace through de-escalation.
My aunt works for the city commissioner as risk management and told me about a cop in another local city. The guy was a former marine. He got out on disability and as many do went into law enforcement because he believed in “protecting and serving” the public. Now the armed forces are extremely well trained in de-escalation techniques in a way American cops absolutely are not.
Rules of engagement in war are far more strict and demand several things be done (warnings and imminent threat assessments must be met before unsanctioned lethal force is allowed). So this marine became a beat cop. He was out on patrol one day and encountered a man with a knife. This man was in an obvious mental health crisis and rather than shooting him the marine used his training to de-escalate and subdue the subject without injuring him. His bosses then almost immediately fired him. Why?
Because he was considered an insurance liability. Because he chose to subdue the subject without force (shooting him) and exposed himself to potential injury by discarding his weapon before approaching and grabbing the man in a restraint maneuver. If he had shot the guy, even killed him because of the knife he would have kept his job and the city would’ve protected him. That is why I don’t trust cops. Especially big city ones.
