I haven't heard about it being used as a response to people being rude.
I've only heard about it as a service worker who sucks at customer service and can't even fake a smile no matter how nice and friendly you are

Maybe I'm thinking of something else then bc there definitely seems to be an epidemic of gen z kids who just suck at customer service, even with no videos being taken and nobody being rude to them or anything
