I think they do go to jail if they get caught and there’s evidence that they did it. A good enough prosecutor could probably stick a charge

People who abandon their pets are pure scum Period. If you can’t handle a pet surrender programs exist for a reason, and plenty of shelters and vet clinics even have an anonymous surrender program. But that’s just too much effort I guess

Then again a good enough defender would probably be able to get them a plea deal or some light punishment like community service for it unfortunately
