Who will our kids’ hero be? Trump? LeBron? Chat gpt? Death of inspiration and motivation to build a career in STEM for the next generation

How many days out of the week do you think about those dead guys? Make an impact on the lives of those around you. Our only legacy will be how our actions are woven into the lives around us, some legacies last longer than others.

Your kids hero should be you

1. Seems like you’re arguing just to argue 2. I don’t think about them because I’m an adult who’s not in STEM, but what if my kid grows up a genius in STEM? I’m no genius so I’d be an insufficient hero for them to model their career after 3. That’s all right and good, we should try to live morally and positively impact the people around us on a daily basis, and we should be our kids heroes, (not sure how morality relates to my original statement) but that’s kind of a grandiose view on life

3. Cont- id say the majority of parents these days are either not great role models, or are not genuinely sharing the interests of their kids. Yes, we should always strive to be our kids hero’s on a moral basis, but my original statement was regarding heroes on a career aspirational basis

What are you saying? We’re fucked? There’s going to be no more great people because of AI? Stem is dead? Great. Do the best you can because if you don’t use ai someone stupider than you will use it to look smarter than you. What are we arguing about here?

Your argument is that there aren’t going to be any more great people in stem, but those great people from before are still going to be there to inspire us. How would your kid even be in the field of stem if AI is going to remove the ability for discovery or creation in that field?

How many people do you know who model their career after LeBron? Trump? Plato? Hawking? Da Vinci? We can respect their accomplishments and achievements but there’s never going to be another Mona Lisa, another MAGA (there will always be shitty politicians), another allegory of the cave, or another discovery of Hawking radiation, so modeling your career off of the discoveries of others only works for LeBron because AI and modernism hasn’t come for basketball yet

That’s the point I’m making, we’re fucked and stem is dead. The typical geniuses we’ve seen for centuries will soon take a completely different form. I use ai every day and I love how helpful it is, I’m just not looking forward to living in a society where using absolute minimal brain power is the norm. If my kid is young and clearly has an aptitude to STEM, their journey through life and career will be aimless because they don’t get to pursue their passion because a computer will always be

I’m talking about the dreams of children of the next generation. Almost all my friends as a kid had a hero they wanted to grow up to be like; athletic, intellectual, astronomer, whatever it may be. I’ve never heard of anyone wanting to grow up to be like someone who’s dead, WHICH IS MY WHOLE POINT! Without a path to succeed in that field, there will be no more giants to look up to, ergo, no more stem

Man we agree but it doesn’t fucking matter. It’s like the printing press or the Industrial Revolution, if you don’t use it you’ll be outperformed by people taking the “easy” way. I’m trying to be optimistic because until Roko’s Basilisk or Skynet are created we will still be here. Humans won’t be replaced entirely for a long time, and the only way to make something of you life won’t be a career or looking up to a great person, it will be how we interact with other humans like it always has been

Yeah I brought morality into it because that’s what separates thinking and feeling people from parrots that use language models to approximate the best answer given from unimaginably large sums of available data and spit it out in a way that is accessible to the average person. We will still be here. Make a real impact in someone else’s life because AI is just google getting a lot better at giving you what you search for, and it will destroy more fields than just stem
