I work in the dining halls (not cooking) and a lot of these cooks r very hardworking but they have hundreds and thousands of ppl to feed for EVERY meal and it’s hard to make so many items for each meal for that many ppl. Tho I will say that I am paying way too much in tuition money to eat half cooked chicken and unseasoned vegetables…

Listen, if it weren’t for the students, YOU would have NO job. Many kitchens are short staffed and have to follow the menus to stay in budget. These students do not deserve moldy breads, fruits, fruit flies landing on their foods, dirty restaurants or attitude. If you feel that way, perhaps you need to look for new employment.

…bestie my university’s dining service is 98% students being paid too little (minimum wage, which is $7-8) to care about the food. They serve raw food almost daily and are the local health departments most infamous offender. They also don’t properly serve students with allergies. Get off your high horse and stop painting with such a broad brush. Not everyone is at a rich kid school with a dining staff and that actually functions properly.

I don’t really understand why we’re focusing on the workers at all. I know people who’ve worked dining hall culinary— they are absolutely victims, you think they don’t have to eat the same dining hall food on their days off? They’re students too y’know, and often don’t have other employment options. The problem is the admin, who treat the workers terribly, pay them terribly, and encourage dangerous practices. Centering the employees at all is distracting from the REAL issue.
