I think (I am a woman) it's manipulative both ways bc I'm a big fan of ethics over here but cannot speak for others unfortunately. But can say bc traditional societal standards teach men that they are supposed to be the ones to pay for things not expecting anything in return (and teach women to expect men to pay and not feel guilty if it turns out feelings aren't recipricated) I'd say that's the reason
