guys how do you manage to make your players find a drive to go on the quest other than money or an npc told em to 😭

the threat of imminent death!give them or their favorite npc a debilitating nearly incurable illness and make them go seek out a witch doctor then make them fight monsters for cure ingredients

other options: loss of status/supplies/gold, gaining status, seeking vengeance, promise of special loot or magic item rewards (perhaps even a treasure map), prophecy fulfillment, a seek for knowledge, unveiling mysteries with scattered hints in key places, using their characters backstory against them (like threat to a family member, finding an heirloom, cultural duties, etc), appealing to character/player morals, stopping or slowing impending doom, status buffs, guaranteed level ups, war, etc

i promise i’m trying- it’s like they aren’t tied to their backstory enough. i’ve worked with them all individually to draw bits and pieces of unresolved or resurfaced issues but they’re just like “why are we doing this again?”
