TO ME, MY FELLOW DMS: I need help, it’s my first ever campaign and already I have the worst combination: I have a player who is both a Min/Maxer AND a rules lawyer. Details upon request. How do I deal with this guy and make things fun for the others

There’s a few different ways. One if things start to drag on. You can have the players kill the monsters early. Another is any time you want to create some tension in your player. Just randomly ask someone for a d20 roll. But never say anything afterwards. Bottom line is, as long as everyone is involved and having fun. Who care.

Honestly, just talk to them. Make sure that they understand that you are a first time DM and set clear expectations with the level of “um, actually” rules lawyering you’re okay with. Like, knowing there are rules for stuff and what sourcebooks they’re in can be helpful, but it’s also annoying if it’s overdone, especially if the justification only comes out after they pitched a ridiculous idea and had it vetoed.

For the min maxing, emphasize that you want everyone to be having fun, and try to work with your party and the min-maxer to make sure that everyone feels appropriately challenged and useful. I’ve played with min maxers before and honestly it can be nice as a player to know that the beefy OP paladin multiclass will protect my squishy character in melee combat, especially if I know that I can get the party out of different problems, like enemies at a distance and locked doors.
