Introduced and killed an npc to make a player’s class change less awkward mid campaign and now my players are begging me to share the details about said npc. I don’t have the heart to tell them it was just a means for an end and his stats were all 10😭😭

You didn’t tell them what the npc’s stats were so you can change that. Also you don’t have to give them information their characters aren’t privy to. If the NPC was an important figure maybe they’ll hear some stories about them.

Thing is that the npc was nothing, but everyone thinks he was a big important guy that they had let die. When in reality he was just to give reason as to why the rouge is now a gunslinger. Like less than a 10 minute convo to trade weapons 😭

If the players are already invested you could try redirecting the interest to something else. For example (and this might not fit with what happened) the local ruler (mayor, governor, lord) outlawed the sale or trade of guns in order to quell the possibility of rebellion. Various shops have ignored this decree and made sales under the table, this npc being one such shop keeper.
