Pro tip: next chance you get, create a PC you would actively dislike if they existed in real life and play as that person. Don’t allow yourself to default to the decisions YOU would make, and see where the story goes because of it.

This is my favorite thing to do. I love making in character decisions that I the player know are stupid

I actually did this a long time ago, I created a Ranger that hated magic and thought it was an abomination to all of the world.

It’s pretty peak. But even beyond that - i play another homebrew game that happens in 1990s USA. I’ve played two characters - one, a rural gas station mechanic who makes it a point to laugh at people’s misfortune, the other, a conceited free clinic nurse who hates her doctor husband for not making more money and deals with it by dipping into the med closet inventory. I would HATE these people irl, but their stories were so fucking fun I swear.

Making characters where the point is to take yourself away from your usual decision making framework from beat one is so satisfying

very new campaign in an ocean pirate setting, think pirates of the caribbean. i’m playing a triton pirate that’s full of herself and had a history of betraying her crew. idk how to play cocky though and i feel bad doing bad decisions lmfao

Get that. Maybe, if there’s a more neutral NPC out there, not someone the party adores or anything, you can screw them over in petty but not overly disruptive ways. Take from their coin purse, or cheat while gambling for their daily rations. More of a “flavor” of your character vs anything that would give big consequences

I feel like it enables me to see a fun perspective. I have a character who is very attached to drinking and cheating despite not even enjoying it. She’s now in a relationship and has to figure out if she’s willing to fix herself to keep it or fall back into bad habits. Flawed characters my beloved

I would also recommend being for the MOST part in agreement with what the other players want to do and how they want to do it, but you can also RP your character moaning and groaning about having to do it, or maybe trying fruitlessly to pawn it off on another crewmate.

the campaign i’m doing rn is literally just me and the dm, i want to try to experiment more with like different characters and maybe voices, it’s definitely a struggle for me though
