Hot take: there’s nothing wrong with having a two sentence backstory nor a 20 page backstory. The only thing that matters is if you actively engage with the story and your party. That’s how the best character moments happen, not through backstory reveals.

My hot take is that splitting the party isn’t inherently bad. In some ways, it helps flesh out your characters more. It doesn’t make any sense for the lawful good paladin to tag along on the chaotic neutral rogue’s late night heist. What is annoying is when the rogue’s heists monopolize the game time. Work with your party to find a balance that works for the whole table.
