Figure out your plan for handling hot/cold weather, water, and bugs. Use sunscreen. Make sure you will be safe out in the field. This includes being safe from nasty coworkers and strangers you may encounter. Keep bear spray with you and watch your back.

Some landowners REALLY don’t like scientists near their property. They think you may be collecting data that will lead to stricter regulations about how they hunt/use their land. Some people can get very aggressive trying to chase you off or damage your vehicle. If you are in a rural area around private land, make sure you check with your supervisor ahead of time about what to do in these situations. There may be specific individuals they already know to avoid
