That’s pretty sad. I’m not very knowledgeable on this sort of policy, how to they plan to make you use it? I’d want to boycott those parts of assignments, or literally do them myself, whatever the “AI “ is supposed to write. I also wonder if organizing a walk out is within reach, I really think there are a lot of students who do care about sticking it to these companies and our universities.
I dont use AI except for coding and I absolutely hate its casual use in society but the cat is out of the bag, we can’t be conservatives about technological progress. We have to use our environmental degrees to minimize its environmental effects. I’m trying to market my degree towards rentable geothermal energy for data centers so we can pivot away from fossil fuels. (I also j need a job)
I completely agree; It’s important that our voices are heard. As an art major, I feel for OP very much. I haven’t been outright forced to use AI, but it’s been pushed as a “tool” or “creative resource.” I believe it hurts artists more than it helps in the long run. In one of my art history classes, there was an “AI Literacy” assignment where we were asked to experiment with writing prompts to AI. I told my teacher I refused to use AI, and treated the assignment like a research documentation.
Making it mandatory for assignments, and the use of it mandatory for grades. There is no way to dodge or work around, my major is like envs / business, they see us as absolutely needing to use it. The only way I have around it, is to look at certain prof syllabi and try to choose the profs that work around it. It’s so discouraging. The past three years I’ve been studying water and how businesses can manage the waste of that natural resource. My work now feels… pointless.
how do we harness that heat? and what about the carbon dioxide emissions due to energy usage and the water being drained from local sources to cool data centers? just because maybe someday this could possibly be made sustainable does not mean it will undo the extensive environmental damage it’s doing in the mean time
