Tbf, the issue is much bigger with u regulated data centers, closed loop that reuses its own water is not nearly as detrimental, it’s just slightly more expensive to build

Feel like we should be asking these questions about all overuse of water. Lawns, sports fields, golf courses etc. however just because one is being talked about more doesn’t mean no one is talking about it or caring.

Producing a gallon of cow’s milk requires about 800 gallons of water. 1 cup of cow’s milk requires 55 gallons of water. This is including the water the cow drinks and the irrigation used to grow their food, and the processing/sanitization water.

I can assure you that just because something is in the news because it’s the only thing driving the economy rn doesn’t mean people aren’t pushing for water conservation and water rights, for California, SW, and the High Plains where we shouldn’t be practicing agriculture or rearing livestock anyway. It’s a massive ordeal

Congrats on being in the know, but it’s just a fact that this is not getting same amount of attention because it’s politically taboo to call out agricultural misuse because farmers happen to grow our food

It is so unethical and against the public’s interest to subsidize the meat/dairy industry, gas and sugar industry. Shit Pmo. Stuff like this genuinely makes me feel like my tax dollars would be better spent if they were burned.

Maybe warm states with low water can give tax breaks to those farmers that pasture-raise their milk cows instead of using feed.

The dairy industry already gets too many government entitlements. - Through the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program and Federal Milk Marketing Orders, the USDA ensures a baseline price for milk. If the market drops or feed costs spike, the government compensates farmers to protect their margins.

When there is an oversupply of milk, the government buys the excess to prevent prices from completely collapsing. This often results in the USDA purchasing massive amounts of cheese and other dairy products to distribute through food banks or store in federal facilities.
