hi friends!! so I’m recycling more things rather than throwing them away, but the result is that I don’t have a ton of trash (yay) but I don’t currently have a sustainable way to get rid of food scraps so I was looking at composting — any tips or advice?

I have a big sealable glass Tupperware type container that I put all my scraps in, when it’s full (takes 3weeks to a month)I empty it in the middle of a field near me. After two rounds of that it looks like a dead body was buried there, so it’s really helping the soil!

There are general rules of thumb for composting when it comes to what to not put in, even if it can be composted

when i started off, i was a little daunted to start composting so i posted on nextdoor asking if anyone had a compost pile that i could add my food scraps to

I’m in an apartment in Atlanta and just use a huge Rubbermaid thing. There’s tons of YouTube videos about how to compost in all kinds of ways! You can even sell it if you make too much (I usually make, like, $5 a year which isn’t much but I’m helping the earth n it’s $5 more than I had before)

this could possibly be an option so I’ll definitely look into it bc you never know, but I would probably be more comfortable composing at home bc I live in a rural area and we’re all spread out, my closest neighbor is about half a mile away (albeit not like FAR but it’s a bit of a walk yk)

thank you 😭 it’s definitely a struggle trying to live more mindfully bc I live in a small community in Texas and let’s just say my mindset is in the minority 😅 we do have a recycling center relatively close and a couple of natural grocery stores all in a 30ish mile radius but past those and the endless farmer’s markets on weekends, most people around here just aren’t thinking about sustainability

im from a small suburb in NJ, and we composted but we weren’t able to compost meat, eggs, and dairy products due to the prevalence of raccoons and rats! There are tutorials online though about how to make a rotating barrel composter for cheap that you can find though!!
