Can someone explain to me how and why the levees from Hurricane Katrina broke? They were installed by the army. Was it just a half assed job or something?

A lot of people think it was actually an intentional sabotage of the levees so that the poorer black communities would absorb most of the damage, I don’t know enough about the theory to have an opinion on it though.

The hurricane was stronger than the projections (climate change likely played a part, but Katrina was also just an abnormally energetic hurricane), so the levees that were built weren’t good enough

After watching 2 Katrina documentaries, I actually believe that. The levees were not built high enough too, and many Black folks trying to survive Katrina were heavily policed and discriminated against and treated like criminals

Also if you watch Episode 3 of Katrina Come Hell And High Water, they go into very specific detail on how it was intentionally discrimination/racism and that’s why Black folks were considered the very last around being helped with Katrina. It’s so fucked up. These folks deserve reparations. Apologies are not nearly enough for the pain and trauma they endured
