Hey field workers! I’m leaving Monday to go to Utah (I live in WA) for 3 weeks of forest ecology field work and I’m worried about working in the extreme heat and UV. I’ll be camping, dispersed. Any camping list essentials or heat/UV tips from field work?

Maybe not a camping tip but for walking or being outside in extreme heat - soak a bandana and squeeze out the excess water. Roll it from corner to corner so it's a long headband and freeze it. Tie this around your forehead. Do it with as many as you have to keep it fresh. Make sure you're drinking LOTS of water, at least a gallon a day. If you're hiking, put ice in your hydro flask.

I do field work in the Florida swamp 🫠Sun shirts are a must! There’s a reason why people who work outside are covered head to toe. I always end up getting the tops of my hands sunburned so don’t forget to apply there. Also don’t only drink water make sure to get Gatorade or liquid IV powder to keep your electrolytes up.

Buy a cheap around the neck fan blower - they have been HEAVENLY for wicking away sweat

I don’t deal with temps quite as hot but it’s been 90–95 where I am the last few days. -Sunscreen -Multiple water bottles, ideally insulated -Extra thermos just for ice/ice water -Liquid IV (powder packs, just mix into one of your water bottles when it’s almost empty) -Hat, headband, or bandana to keep sweat out of eyes

If it’s really hot and you’re doing hard work you should drink a liter of water an hour, with a salty snack every two. If no salty snack, then get electrolyte power to mix with your water (for example, liquid IV). You need salts for water retention!!! Rest in the shade whenever possible, and do not try to look impressive and push yourself. Whoever’s in charge should understand. You’re coming from a cooler place, so physiologically your body just is not going to be adapted for a few weeks

Definitely buy some SPF long sleeve light colored shirts! I really enjoy the Columbia PFG ones with the hood for under my hard hat

Those lightweight sun hoodies are the absolute best if you’re in a low humidity, high UV index area. I carry at least a gallon on me every work day and then have an insulated bottle of cold water in the truck or my campsite. Every hour spend 5-10 minutes in the shade and keep a constant idea of your conditions. If you’re in a forested area it shouldn’t be too horribly hot fortunately.

If you're able to stay kinda stationary and keep your drinking water in a bottle/carry it, freeze your hydro pack* entirely. I'm talking about the camelback bladder thing. So you're just wearing an ice pack on your back basically. If you're in a dry area, mist your body! If you're in a humid area, fan your body. Drink drink drink! And then drink more! You should be peeing like every 2 hours at least

For the UV - ZINC! It actually reflects the sun. Chemical sunscreens just absorb it. Zinc will keep you cooler. If you can, wear a long sleeve white sun shirt and a big sun hat. Reapply whenever you can. Don't forget the backs of your hands!! If you've got a long shirt, you can dampen the sleeves and it will help pull heat away too.

With liquid IV, this is purely personal preference, but they say to mix 1 packet with 16 oz of water but then it’s still so concentrated it’s kind of gross for me to drink so I mix 1 packet with 32 oz (a liter). You gotta want to drink ur water lol.

Personally I even drink it with like 6-8 oz instead, that way it’s sweet enough that it’s basically a sports drink and it doesn’t taste so weak that it’s gross
