Got paid to video myself squishing an invasive bug (spotted lanternfly), I think I’m starting to peak at simultaneously slutmaxxing and environmentmaxxing.

pro tip: go out in early mornings at this time to scrape them off of trees if it’s really cold out, then you can freeze them + pluck wings to make jewelry and whatnot. They are gorgeous insects and I don’t hate them for simply existing, so I do try to kill swiftly/humanely.

Apparently they’re not in California (yet) so I’ll be vigilant 👀

just got word of a dead one found in Mid-Michigan and I am HYPER-FOCUSED on making sure they do not invade my region. Pittsburgh is already bad enough, those poor sumac trees 😭😭😭😭

You say you don’t hate them simply for existing yet you’re making their dead bodies into jewelry? Yeah I don’t buy that. Also if you’re freezing them to kill them that is definitely not humane

freezing is generally considered the most humane way to kill insects. besides, these guys are incredibly harmful to the ecosystem. if they need to die anyway, isn’t it better that their death isn’t in vain and their beauty is turned into jewelry instead of rotting on the ground?

Fr like I be out there squashing them for fun might as well get paid for helping out the ecosystem

I beg of you to research the definition of invasive species & some examples of the environmental (& economic) damages that they cause globally. Great Lakes examples: 1) zebra mussels 2) sea lamprey 3) autumn olive (woody plant) 4) emerald ash borer

I’m very aware that endangered species cause enormous damage, zebra mussels are a huge problem where I’m from. That doesn’t negate the point that their lives are valuable as sentient individuals. Humans are literally the most invasive species on earth I don’t see anyone advocating to cull us

Ok true I take your point about turning them into jewelry if they’re already dead. But as far as I know there’s still a debate about how humane freezing is and I’d want to air on the side of caution bc insects do have central nervous systems and are probably sentient in some capacity

alright, I’ll bite: what’s the most humane method in your opinion?

invasive species, not endangered… that’s the opposite word. without checks & balances in nature, it would cause devastation to the landscape. yea, humans destroyed the most unique habitat ecosystem the planet had ever seen with The Great Raft of the Red River before they cleared it. we suck. but at least we know what happens if, say, the rabbit population got entirely out of hand in Australia.
