Dr. Sylvia Earle was asked if she was a radical ab protecting the ocean, her response was “If I seem like a radical, it may be because I see things that others do not…if they witnessed what I see when I go diving…I would not seem like a radical at all”

I read her book for a marine science class and when I went snorkeling for the first time in the Gulf, I immediately thought of her describing it as flying in an underwater world. That had me giggling like a child as I flew over all these familiar species I’d learned about in class. It was the most childlike I’d ever felt in my 20s!

I love that! I’ve read so much of her work, she’s so brilliant. She has also always said being under water makes her feel like a child in a toy store. I feel similarly too. It really is one of the best feelings to see a species that you spent time studying out in the wild.

I grew up loving Peter Pan and always wanted to fly. It felt like a dream come true in such an unexpected way. I got to see parrotfish feeding which created the sand on the beaches, and I SCREAMED into my full-face snorkel mask when I saw a pair of longhorn cowfish 🥹
