If sustainability is a major part of your life, he should respect that. (Not saying break up at all, BUT there are so many people out there who share that same passion for sustainability just like you!) do not give up your values just because of your partner, I hope this at least makes you feel a little better ❤️

Stand your ground honestly, if he doesn’t at least try to dial down on his use of ai for “stupid” things (I believe u so hard on that one) then I’m sorry but he doesn’t care about how you feel. You are allowed to have opinions and want a partner who cares AT LEAST about how you feel about it and not use it around you. If that were me I would just make fun of him, guys do not like feeling intellectually inferior

am realizing over time that part of me is kind of starting to resent him for it. i’ve educated him abt gen ai and all its implications (environmental and non-envtmental), he says he’s cut down, but then just hides it from me bc he knows it upsets me. i want to not care, but can’t help but feel upset by it. it’s rly hard for me to separate bc sustainability is my entire life, both professional and personal. trying to not care makes me feel like im losing part of my passion and something that’s so

I don’t know you or your partner and it seems like it really bothers you, and that is valid. Honestly I just poke fun at my bf if he does something I don’t like, and he usually fixes it lol. But that’s just me.

I’m not saying definitely to break up and idk how much you want this relationship to work out but a good rule of thumb is to not be in a relationship with someone who you wouldn’t otherwise be good friends with

Do not compromise on something you care so fiercely about. It will breed resentment and in the end you’ll end up miserable and breaking up long after you lost feelings. I know 2.5 years can feel hard to “throw away” over something that most people would see as silly. But the sunk cost fallacy is dangerous. Been there done that and girl it isn’t worth it. You’ve done your part. Talking to him, educating, saying it makes you uncomfortable and he continues to do it. Even hides it from you.

as someone who really values the environment as well, I understand. if this has been something been going on for months though….that makes it a slight problem. you can’t control his life, but he can control his actions. if he knows how it makes you feel and still decides to use it, that makes it a problem. Im very strong in my beliefs and something like this would give me the ick after a while. a relationship is about respecting each other and your beliefs, and if he can’t do that after multiple

Its also hard cuz we dont know what ai will become in the future and who knows how dependent he will become on it in the future too if hes addicted now

From experience, life will be so much more fun shared with a sustainably guy. (not for everyone, but these are your values) The ai usage is a microcosm of his world view, and ultimately respect for you.

Is it really that bad? Like comparatively, is the pollution and resources used from one person using an LLM or GenAI really that harmful?

I use it to reword LinkedIn messages and for networking stuff since I don’t know how to act corporate yet but I’d say if it spills out of his work into his real life like if he starts asking it about restaurants and stuff then that’s when it gets bad

If he’s hiding little things like this that behavior can grow into a pattern with bigger things. Truly is lay down the deal. Stop using it unless absolutely necessary (which is technically never but some jobs do want you to use it I guess) or you’ll have to part ways. Don’t ignore your own morals / beliefs to stay with someone who doesn’t respect them or you.

Guys I don’t use it for anything else and believe it should not have a personality and should only be used as a technical tool NOT for any creative purposes.

conversations that’s problematic. I’d have one more serious talk about it so you can really communicate the way you’re feeling, especially if it’s leading to resentment. but if nothing changes after that then the respect he has for you is quite clear
