Y’all I work I FDEP I promise we care about manatees but it’s FWC jurisdiction to do manatee stuff 🥺 DEP does drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, solid waste, hazwaste, underground & above ground gas tanks, wetlands, docks, mangroves, etc. We don’t even have boats in our district. We regulate EPA watched programs but the water stuff is FWC.
It’s seems kinda complicated really, I only really care about them still being protected, it seems like due to the current administration “editing” the ESA, that Florida is appealing a court ruling so they aren’t responsible, (something to do with them wanting to build septic tanks? Or they built them and are getting in trouble for it now? It doesn’t seem like it’s moving to another agency unfortunately—I do hope so though
A judge ruled that the FEDP failed to protect manatees (around 2000 died) due to a violation of the endangered species act, the article I’m showing is Florida trying to appeal it, the violation is that the court doesn’t believe the FEDP did not do enough to regulate the harmful effects of sewage runoff that led to algae blooming and seagrass die off (this is all a summary of several articles I’ve read) and this has been in the court since April but the FEDP is trying to appeal it now.
Timing-wise the ESA was rewritten and then the FEDP was taken to court and charged, and are now trying to appeal it, I feel like if they weren’t properly regulating sewage properly they kinda are at fault for the manatee deaths? I get that a different sector oversees it, but like I said in another comment this all seems kinda messy and I’m only worried about what message this sends to people who don’t care about manatees.
