Me, holding a mug to my chest as I gaze wistfully at a wildfire: “We needed this.”

The way I crash out when I see headlines that there’s an out of control forest fire in an area where they SHOULD be practicing control burns

native americans been doing this for generations before colonization. plants and animals adapted to fire use. when it stopped, the fire adapted species were outcompeted by species that aren’t fire adapted. ecosystems like this longleaf pine savanna should be burned every 2-4 years. it keeps the understory open so plants have more light to grow, and when plants grow lower to the ground species like the gopher tortoise can access them.

savanna and prairie species are adapted to the fires. longleaf pine has thick bark and needles to protect sensitive parts. perennials get top killed in the fire but roots remain intact for the plant to return the next year. aggressive trees aren’t fire adapted, like sweetgum and maple.

when the LA victims said they weren’t worried about a fire because there hadn’t been one in over 60 years

Controlled burns keep the shrubs down. Without controlled burns, they’ll grow too much and be enough kindling to make full forest fires happening where the trees burn
