If it makes you feel any better I’m a white girl with only poc friends at college and at home. I am my own person and speak very generically american but now and then I’ll make a sound or use a word that my mom would label “black.” I think Gen X+ will always have their reservations abt the “other”.
I was looking for an expensive going out purse and wasn’t loving anything I was seeing while out w my mom. We walked by an MCM Outlet window and I saw the CUTEST little black bag w a gold emblem. My mom didn’t like the bag (too “loud” for her w the gold) but said “yk it makes sense that you’d like that. you’d fit right in w your little friends” and I’m like “wdym?” and she goes on to say that MCM is a “black brand” and sometime in the 90s/00s white women stopped wearing it.
When I finally found my voice in highschool and started to get more confident my mom blamed it on me going to a predominantly Hispanic high school. She told me to stop trying to act like a Mexican girl. I’m white and never tired to act any different I just was fed up with her bs and backhanded comments
