in their eyes it’s a “we did this thing that made us unhappy so YOU could be happy” mindset but their failure here is to recognize that the possibility of happiness could also come from not staying together. poor decision making without considering all possibilities

My dad committed, and often enough my mom would tell us “your dad did what he did and left me holding the bag” (my brother and I being “the bag”) made us feel unwanted and like a huge burden. Long story short, family sucks sometimes, and I’ll ALWAYS remember that.
