"Beta" means software that is still in testing & might be unreliable or changed a lot in the future. They've put a lot of work into it since 2009 (and earlier!) so now it can finally be considered a complete & stable product, out of beta testing. It doesn't really change anything for users but its a big accomplishment for the developers :)

Much fewer crashes than in 2009, yes. They have like 99.9% uptime these days but its unavoidable sometimes
