also “just smut” implies that all explicit fics have no creative value which is untrue, some of the best character writing i’ve ever read has been explicit. fanfic of all kinds gets an unnecessary stigma

There are so many amazing topics and concepts that fanfic writers cover that have nothing to do with romance or sex or any of that. In depth character studies; found family; how to deal with grief; AUs where estranged families reconnect; etc.

Sometimes they make up characters or scenarios just to be able to further explore the fantastical worlds of canon

yup personally i don’t like reading fanfic where there is smut but no emotional connection between the characters. it’s more about the drama and how compelling the writing is for me than about the sex. it’s just that sex is a part of being human and many authors use that to their advantage when writing character dynamics.

holy crap i love character studies. authors who are so passionate about characters and see themselves in them write genuinely some of the most touching and sometimes emotionally devastating fics i have ever read.
