For every person that comments, there’s likely 5 more that don’t. As much as I wish everyone would comment, the reality is a lot of readers just choose not to, and it’s usually not for anything negative. Maybe they’re shy, maybe they’re just someone that doesn’t like to comment. A lack of commenters isn’t necessarily a reflection of your skill.
As someone who’s been a regular commenter but stopped before, it was never because I didn’t like the fic. Usually I’d get really busy and miss an update, and then a second chapter would come out but obviously that takes longer than one so I’d put it off till I had time, etc etc and eventually I forget for weeks. I lowkey comment less on new fics because of it bc ik my life will get hectic and I don’t wanna break some poor writers heart
I know losing a regular commenter can feel like a gut punch, but don’t take it too much to heart. Sometimes, people lose interest and move on; that’s not anything you set out to do. Readers that regularly comments aren’t subscribing to your fic; they’re not obligated to continue reading. In my opinion, what’s important is the fact that they went out of their way to say something. Your work was enough for them to leave a comment, which— as I mentioned earlier— a lot of readers choose not to do.
I love receiving comments on my fics; I can read what people think about my work, and it’s really motivating seeing proof beyond kudos or hits that indicates that someone out there is interesting in my writing. With that being said, even though comments are always awesome to get, the important thing is that you’re having fun, you’re enjoying the process, and that you’re creating what you want to at your own pace.
Also know that’s it’s okay to feel hurt and to wonder. There’s nothing wrong with that, you’re not unappreciative, just human. And yeah a break is good, honestly the second I stopped checking for kudos or hoping for comments I felt less discouraged. They’re great and they’re terrible lol
