ao3 stands for “archive of our own”, and it being an archive by definition means that it’s a collection of all of the fics uploaded; “all”being taken quite seriously, aka even if you don’t like the kink / trope / relationship / plot within the fic, it should still be on the site because ao3 itself is a record of all of the fics uploaded to the site :)

what #2 said, it’s basically just an archive for fanworks. context though is that ao3 was founded by wincest shippers since their fanworks were removed from other sites. now I’m not an incest fan for what I read but that’s the beauty of ao3–don’t like don’t read! however the discourse involves one of the alt prompts for a day is incest and that seems to be the biggest one people are flipping out about on TikTok, yet they forgot what ship resulted in ao3’s birth 😅

Modern day fanfiction often dates itself back to Star Trek due to ST fans creating a lot of the key terms like shipping and the magazines/zines they made, but AO3 itself is super new (after all, how long ago did most people have access to the internet?)
