we need to start posting fic exclusively for the love of the game bc this makes me so sad. we need to put the archive back in archive of our own…..
Anxiously checking if the first chapter of my new fic has hits bc I can’t sleep if it stays at 0 then I’m lame

operating word being exclusively, you shouldn’t be thinking of yourself as lame or lose sleep over forces outside your control! approval should be a plus and not a risk/reward

Losing sleep was an exaggeration, and posting on ao3 makes it inherently open to either approval or criticism… if you wanna dictate how people do it for the love of the game then fanfic should only EVER be private in that case

ok i see, i just say all that bc i don’t understand how hits are a sign of approval or why it matters just personally. and i wish it didn’t matter to others either since it feels like the longer i’m in fandom the more it becomes a popularity contest (not saying that’s what you’re doing, just how fandom feels broadly)

to me hits aren’t necessarily approval but interest. like I write what I want to read and I’ll continue writing regardless of perceived approval, but the point of ao3 is that it’s our community, so I like to see that there’s part of the community that actually wants to see and enjoy what I’ve created. fandom to me is too broad and spread out to ever be a popularity contest and maybe that’s why we feel differently. there is no perfect and popular for everyone
