No I don’t believe reading stories about lgbt people fetishizes them, even if the stories are sexual in nature. That leads to puritanical belief systems that are incredibly harmful, because by saying certain people shouldn’t engage with queer stories if they’re sexual you are saying people shouldn’t engage with a large portion of queer stories which leads to people being desensitized to these stories being banned. Also who in the real world gives a fuck. Like legit who cares.

Personally I don’t believe a gay romance story is inherently fetish content. To me that’s like saying gay relationships can only be viewed in a sexual framework and that romantic, emotional fulfillment doesn’t exist. If the exact same storyline bar for bar is considered perfectly normal to enjoy reading if the two are heterosexual, but fetishizing if they’re the same gender, then I think that speaks more on how someone views homosexuality than the content itself

Do you believe that straight men watching lesbian porn is fetishizing lesbians?

Comparing lgbt fiction with sexual themes to porn is problematic in its own way but I’ll bite. It depends, is he seeking out queer porn because he thinks lesbians are “so hot” and because he specifically wants to things that fetishize lesbians? Or is he watching it because it’s porn, and he enjoys watching porn, and it just happens to have two women. There’s a difference in intent and I believe it’s only fetishization if it is intended to be fetishization.

I think that, at face value, reading queer stories that you’re personally not a part of isn’t fetishizing at all. However, the stories can absolutely still be fetishizing based on their content and how they are written. Like how lots of lesbian porn is made to be hotter to men watching it rather than actual lesbians.

There is a large section of yaoi that is truly just sexual content with less plot than the average porno, when the whole thing is about sex I think it’s valid to compare to porn.

I mean, I give a fuck about being hypersexualized and fetishized by straight men as a lesbian, so I try to extend that same courtesy towards gay men as well.

So I’m a gay man, realized this years ago, but, I don’t see how reading stories about lgbt people that would be fine if they were straight is ever wrong. If anything it makes queerness be seen as a more sexual and taboo thing which is never what we want.

It affects people when they are fetishized and I’ve definitely heard gay men say they have felt massively uncomfortable kissing in public or showing affection to their partners in public because of the fetishizing they have personally experienced. Not saying it’s for every yaoi/BL story and every gay man’s experience, but it still definitely matters.

(It wouldn’t be so widely fetishized if it wasn’t seen as a taboo)

When applied to romances and stories that have some sexual themes, of course, but when the whole story is meant specifically for sex and pornographic content then no. It’s not making it taboo for trying to orient sexual queer content back to the proper readers.

I think liking gay stories isn’t bad, it’s when you only care about the sex and the porn of the characters is when it’s bad and literally nothing else. Have had a guy say how hot it is with girl on girl porn, and it came across as him only seeing lesbians as a purely sexual gratification for him and not actually seeing them as humans.

yeah i think the real appeal of girl on girl porn for a straight guy is that he’s only attracted to women, so he’s only interested in seeing the women in the porn. but i think that gets conflated (both by the guy & the people he’s talking to) in a lot of cases with being into lesbians specifically, when the reality is that he just finds the women hot and doesn’t have to watch some other guy who he’s not attracted to

Yes exactly. That’s what I mean by fetishized is seeing them only as sexual gratification rather than people
