As a lesbian I wish fandom wasn’t so male centered :(

Real. Why are the lesbians always a side ship, if they’re even present?

As a male writer, I want to hear more, how can I help to make more stories for you without it seeming like I’m fetishizing?

I think it’s because male characters are generally more popular/well written to attract the female audience vs. the male, and women do a lot more fandom creation too. Most popular ships are gay but for a show like Avatar where everyone is great, the most popular ships are straight.

that said there are a few fandoms I can think of where a plurality if not an outright majority of fics are wlw: Worm/Parahumans Orphan Black The 100 The Locked Tomb

And like. what's up with people posting literal cishet men and saying "they're butches to me" NO that is a MAN he has a BEARD if you want women there are great female characters right here! or just acknowledge that you're attracted to this man in a straight way instead of trying to queerwash your attraction somehow! god!

like be fucking for real travis yellowjackets is not a lesbian (and that show has so many good lesbians to choose from anyway?!?) alexander hamilton is not a woman. anakin skywalker is not a dyke

Imma be so honest I’ve never seen anyone call anakin a dyke (probably bc I hate that bitch) but I can believe it. There’s a difference between thinking a character is queer and like. Feeling like you can’t like one that isn’t queer so saying they are. If that makes sense

I LOVE the locked tomb! I haven’t heard of word/parabumans but I’ll look into it!

Honestly for me it isn’t so much that people aren’t making stories (though I always encourage it and I think it’s pretty easy to not fetishize, just write a normal story lol), it’s the lack of interaction or respect for the women/sapphic ships. People will blatantly just disregard women/lesbians bc the men are “more interesting”

And I get it, fandom is like what you like, but I wish people realized that there’s a reason they can make up a thousand headcanons for this bland man, but refuse to interact with any woman bc she’s “boring” or “annoying”

But my tip for genuinely helping bc you asked, is to simply interact with sapphic content! You’d be surprised how ignored it gets, just commenting on fics or reblogging art makes such a difference! Just don’t ignore us

Okay, so really just making the effort to engage more. I think I just worry about seeming like I’m fetishizing because I’m a straight man not because of what I actually write

Ok I will take that note, I could definitely interact with it more

I don’t think there will be any problem with being seen as fetishizing if you’re respectful, and if you worry about being perceived that way I would just be sure to compliment the craft if that makes sense lol but yeah write what you want to write! I’m not going to hold you at gunpoint to make you write yuri do you don’t want to lmao

No you're so right, people will do ANYTHING to avoid talking about actual lesbians. You mentored Yellowjackets, so I'll go off on a tangent, I HATE that taivan, the canon lesbian couple gets less attention than non canon ships like javkieshauna and such :( taivan is so peak!! Idk why people refuse to give any love (jk I know why it just makes me mad)

Personally I’m also in the throes of catardora lmao but there’s also a lot of good caitvi out there, unfortunately you will have to brave the jay ik shippers (SCREAM) the same goes for ronance, lots of great stuff out there but men to deal with :/

Worm is great bc there are like 200 characters and maybe six of them are even semi-interesting men and the fandom just doesn't even care about them. But it's also terrible because a lot of the older fics are just genuinely awful and normalize a bunch of terrible viewpoints. Like tbh I'd avoid most pre-2020 stuff.
