it’s not real, it’s all just confirmation bias plus whose more likely to write fanfic ppl whose lives are great or ppl where it feels like everything is falling apart and they need an escape? I am not a good example of this though because about a year after starting posting my most popular fic I did so terribly in a class I had to drop and sprained my ankle and got hit with two hurricanes one where I was home and the generator broke so we just had no power until they fixed the powe
(note that the ao3 curse isnt actually real. our brains are more likely to pick up on and remember big things that happen to authors like hospitalization- look up the availability heuristic!- and ignore the many authors, like myself, who have never had anythiny major happen bc i posted on ao3. everyones life has static. we're just more likely to see it on ao3 bc authors will tell their readers if something happened to them to disrupt their update schedule)
