idk if this is it but the "these two characters have never interacted in cannon and might not even be part of the same source material but im putting them together anyway" vibes (think jack frost and elsa) have been dying out of fandom spaces as new people come in- so theres been more of a focus on "cannon accurate" fandom which i imagine is leading to less OCs
