What are your thoughts on people putting downloaded fics into a Google Drive and sharing them since Ao3 has gone down?

Authors have a right to be upset when people put their fics in massive publicly linked google drives because Gemini scrapes those. There is a very small group of authors expressing anger at people downloading their fics at all, which is crazy. But the majority are mostly worried about AI scraping and how when they say “I’m worried about AI scraping my fic” they get laughed off and told they’re entitled.

I hear a lot of people complaining about authors being upset about their works being put in, but I feel like that’s kind of unfair. I think it would make me feel really uncomfortable if a work I published as ‘for registered users only’ was put on a Google Drive. I feel like there are reasons those others prefer to keep their work private

I mean they’re public works on a public site where people can download them and the authors are aware of that when they post on ao3; not to say that we should blatantly disrespect an author that has expressed that they don’t want their fics in a Google Drive but also

I also follow authors who have been harassed before and they’re very very scared of having their fic somewhere they didn’t upload and therefore can’t take down when shit hits the fan. Sending your friend a Google Drive link through DMs? Most authors don’t care. (Gemini only scrapes publicly posted folders.) Posting a gdrive folder link to, say, Reddit or tumblr where possibly hundreds or thousands will find the fic there? Yeah, I think it’s fair for authors to be uncomfortable and to care.
