I don't know too XD. But from my few experiences, usually when there is a nice opportunity, go to someone that share common interests and try talk about it.

You mentioned school so I’m gonna assume college. I’m no social butterfly but I found the best way to make friends is just go for it. Start small by asking them their name and major. Maybe what high school they went to or where they’re from. I hate small talk but it’s a good way to get the ball rolling
