I need advice!!! I don't have an Xbox, PlayStation, or a gaming PC but I just saw the Steam Machine which should maybe be able to play games of all those consoles I don't have and I like consoles more than a computer- do you think it's worth getting??

It’s gonna depend on price. I have the steamdeck and love it for travel or just chilling on the couch. Steam machine is supposed to be 6x more powerful so for what we know about it so far the capabilities seem worthwhile. But price makes all the difference.

If it’s $5, sure. If it’s $1000+, fuck no.

I'd suggest a Rog Ally or a Mini PC with similar parts to a rog and set it to about 720p with vsync disabled

My concern is the os. I want it to run something other than linux cause I don't want Steam to give me the "Not compatible with device" disclaimer

Why do you say that? Also mind you I know nothing about a PC like I just learned a few weeks ago that you can't just buy any ole computer or laptop and that as much as I know about it so I don't even know any of the words you said 😭

Isn't the steam machine a PC so it won't have this problem? You can download prolly Windows to play popular multiplayer games if any issues come up,at least according to my research

It is a pc, just unsure if the OS will be similar to steamdeck and yeah it's possible to put windows os on it but many don't like to do that

It’s going to have SteamOS so yes Linux. But I don’t think you’ll have to worry about compatibility. Steam spends a lot of time ensuring they have subsystems that translate different device language to something manageable to avoid compatibility issues. I use PlayStation controllers with steam, Xbox controllers, Nintendo controllers, and even third party with no issues. Only thing I can’t speak on is VR.

And to be honest, coming from a windows user my whole life, I think Linux is just better to use. It’s more to learn but once you do you have all the control and the community is massive so chances are if you end up needing something someone has already built a solution.

Rog Ally is portable and runs windows (don't really need to change any settings other than vsync for most games) and a mini pc (which I bought for the wife to be) was only $300 with the same parts just with double the ram and half the storage space

So it’s gonna run on steam os but they confirmed that you can run windows on it and they will not make any attempt to stop you

Yeah you should be able to dual boot and everything. I use my steamdeck as an emulator to play all the old games from the 90’s. Just be careful OP about the OS. Linux is freeing but with that freedom comes the ability to fuck it up. Look stuff up before you start mucking about the OS and changing stuff. Still. Windows comes fucked up so 🤷🏻‍♂️ either way.
