Not saying anyone involved in these decisions should survive this biblical level of greed but I cannot comprehend how people are discussing why or how this is happening.

Hi OP, the video game is economy has crashed before. That is how Nintendo got in. The issue today though is many publishers are operating like casinos where they focus on loot boxes for profits rather than fun game mechanics. Addiction will keep the hubris going until the government imposes rules like Vegas.
