DIY cost of a similar machine saves you only 79$ and that’s if you already have a case.

U can easily find a prebuilt with better value at the same price, plug it to ur tv and put picture mode, it’s not compact but I doubt anybody cares that much

The whole point of building something like the Steam machine is that people do care that much. They want to sit down, have their controller turn on the tv, have all their games on hand. They don’t want to monkey with a wireless keyboard and mouse, and they don’t want to have to monkey with windows driver updates. They want it to Just Work. The cost of the Steam Machine isn’t just the components, it’s the promise that Valve will remove the friction for living room gaming.

No need for all that yapping I know what a steam machine is, the engineer is great but still not worth the price. Setting up big picture mode and a controller on a desktop isn’t that hard. If it was $900 for 1tb with a controller then that’s ok value right there. But $1050 for 500gb and no controller? No way you can actually justify the price

Your opinion sucks, I have not once asked a question on my post or first comment, just statements, but go ahead and buy that overpriced cube

Lmao dude, you’re acting like Valve has the ability to pull pricing out of its ass. You want to be mad at someone? Be mad at Sam Altman driving up to cost of RAM, SSDs and Motherboards. “No need for all that yapping” is your own problem. It takes inordinately more work to refute bs than it takes to produce.

If your price floor is based on what we (and valve) wanted in 2025, then yeah, 800 for a console and 900 with a controller makes a lot of sense, but we don’t live in a fantasy world, component prices are all up, and Valve can’t get the volume discounts that Microsoft, Apple, Sony, and Nintendo can get, and they all raised their prices.

Literally look at the price increase on the steam deck, and then subtract that from the Steam machine price, and you get what valve’s intended value for this console is, and you can see what the bullshit LLM data centers have done for our hobbyist market.

It doesn’t matter to Valve if you buy a pre-built, DIY, or Steam Machine, you’re gonna buy your games on Steam. They win. The Steam Machine is a new thing that deserves to exist. I’m all set, I already have the DIY PC I want, but acting like it shouldn’t exist because the market got more expensive is ludicrous, and your opinion isn’t based on anything except your own fantasies.

I have a monster PC and a steam deck, and the loading times with an SD card are genuinely negligible, and the Steam machines onboard SSD and RAM are both user upgradable. The value prop is there, and unlike the Xbox or the PlayStation, Valve isn’t able to sell these at a loss because you aren’t locked into their ecosystem: it’s a PC.

Hows that for yapping? Quit your bullshit.
