It is allowed inherently by the premise of Greek life. Putting groups of young men who are sexual, give them brotherhood and the general holding of the frat and Greek life as a figure above morals/in high regard to cult like status. Not to mention hazing and secrecy, throw in parties (they should only be about philanthropy with groups) and drugs and if something happens, no one says anything or punishes members unless it gets out.

upvote 20 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> #6 13h

I think greek life is awful but banning it wouldn’t really do anything. The men who are going to rape are going to do it regardless of if they’re in a frat or not. Same with the women who will rape and those who will falsely accuse. It won’t do anything. Same thing where like if you banned guns people would still kill people it’d just make a few people feel a little better temporarily. We need to combat the problem by educating men at a young age about boundaries and be very serious about it

Yes, it is the school's problem, but why does every campus with Greek life have some heinous, horrible story that goes around campus as a “don't do this again” connected to a fraternity? All of these institutions have blood on their hands for enabling Greek life. So do you.

Limiting an organization where it is normalized to assault its own members as initiation would tremendously help the situation, as it is a hot spot for victimization and can prevent future crimes from taking place.

The people who think that all men are rapists are the problem but so are the people who think it’s just some men. We all have urges, intrusive thoughts, it’s a horrific part of life. But most of us have the intelligence to rise above those carnal instincts. It’s beyond shameful for all men that some cannot

upvote -3 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #16 13h

What are you even saying, buddy? The fact that you are most likely to be victimized by someone you know, who knows your daily routines, and when you aren't around someone capable of intervening, isn't just a “human urge”; it is a premeditated act of violence against a human being, lol.

upvote 11 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #17 13h

I absolutely believe that frats should be limited. Both because of rape and the dangerous and awful hazing. I’m just saying banning them outright doesn’t really help anything. But have campus police go undercover at parties or something, just to make sure things are tame. I don’t know what the best solution is but I think a middle ground can be found that helps women tremendously without banning frats and leaving these guys roaming free to rape anywhere they please. Does that make sense?

upvote -2 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #16 13h

Not really, since sororities have to have a house parent not to be considered a brothel, there are distinct historical ties between victimization and Greek life, and banning a hot spot where it is normalized is 100% a solution.

upvote 15 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #17 13h

I completely agree. What I’m saying is sexual urges in general are natural but control over them needs to be hammered into young boys. Rape is almost always premeditated but, and correct me if I’m wrong, most of what happens at frat parties and those sorts of places is a spontaneous event. Both are terrible. They’re just different issues in my opinion that need to be tackled differently and again, from the source from a young age

upvote 7 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #17 13h

What I’m saying is that banning them would just lead these guys to find a new place. They will party. Nobody will stop that. But knowing where it is is at least something so that hopefully safety measures can be implemented in those frat houses. Otherwise it could just be anywhere

upvote 4 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #16 13h

I hate frat parties as a whole. I just don’t believe banning them would change what happens, it would only change where it happens. It’s more of a spectacle than a solution. Though admittedly spectacle could bring attention to it and potentially help the problem in at least some way

bc the thing abt greek life is that the epstein class all were in frats. they all did crazy shit, gay shit, and partook in felony activity. greek life in the abstract, everything it’s meant to be, is fine. but in practice it creates a culture of violence, in group/out group, and secrecy that puts everyone else at risk of them.

they know about boundaries, they just don’t care. and just like banning guns SIGNIFICANTLY drops murder rates, banning greek life would also significantly reduce sa rates. banning guns does stop most people from murder bc 90ish% of murder is not premeditated. same with rape. take away the means and people won’t commit the crime at nearly the frequency

I’m not in favor of a surveillance state. It was just an example of something we could do to protect the girls at those parties. Or you could force the frats to require girls stay in groups. Idk. I’m not saying I think I can fix it all with the snap of my fingers or with one idea. I’m just one person

upvote 8 downvote

Frankly I don't think this is the answer. It would just make Greek life go underground. My university hasn't banned it entirely but they have decided to not recognize 2 frats and the frats just continue to operate but now with less regulation which is just more dangerous. One was even derecognized by their own nationals and it's just a group of guys who call themselves a group and have parties.

upvote 11 downvote
default user profile icon

even if we’re not talking abt rape, underage drinking, exposure to drug use, grooming (some of the freshman at these parties are 17 and getting hit on by seniors 21+)

And that new place, or “organization,” should be shut down too. I'm a bartender, they aren't gonna shut down bars. But Greek life is basically a bar without rules or regulations, and without real consequences. If I overserve someone, I can be criminally liable. These fraternities don't hold the same legal responsibility, which makes them a hot spot for victimization.

I don’t support rape, what happened was bad. BUT IT WAS NOT RAPE. REGRET IS NOT RAPE.

NEITHER ONE did the right thing in the situation. is it so hard for you people to understand that TWO PEOPLE CAN DO THE WRONG FCKING THING AT THE SAME TIME. WTF

at NO point did she try to stop it. SHE did ketamine in the first place. SHE kept doing ketamine. SHE wanted the threesome. THE BOYS were also high. THE BOYS shouldn’t have done it, but SHE more than enabled it. as a girl, never once have i been in a situation like that. you would be amazed at the decrease in risk of being raped, sa’d, manipulated, and other such events

Exactly if she had any thought of not wanting it she would’ve found a way to make it known. She wanted it and got it, realized it screwed her reputation forever and then after regretting it said it was rape. IT WAS NOT RAPE. REGRET IS NOT RAPE.

The men aren’t criminally responsible because they broke no laws in New York (I’m not saying what they did was right or good but IT WAS NOT ILLEGAL). WHY DO YOU THINK THE STAGE REFUSED TO TAKE THE CASE AND PROSECUTE THEM? BECAUSE IT WASN’T ILLEGAL IN NEW YORK AND THE GUYS AREN’T CRIMINALS

Here's my thing. Yes if she didn't go and do a bunch of ketamine would that have made it easier for her to decline or maybe get out of the situation? Sure you could argue that. HOWEVER, a woman should have the right to do drugs and party without being assaulted just as much as a man does. Like that's not fair. And I know the world we live in isn't fair but this feels like blaming her

if she didn’t go or do ketamine, she wouldn’t have been IN the situation. she literally willingly went along with everything and afterwards joked about it and said that “we’re all adults” and “it wasn’t illegal” and “our body our choice af”. then she got rejected from a party and got mad. if that’s not irresponsible idk what is

I feel like ur just talkin about the white Greek life cus D9 Greek life while we have our hazing issues, are actually useful and pillars of society / the black community. So maybe do a lil more research to help support your blanket statements 👍🏽

I genuinely don't think people fully grasp the nuance of Greek life especially for poc. And as problematic as white Greek life can be they still literally raise millions for charity

The Cornell 7 aren’t rapists, you can’t say they are when it was all consensual it was just morally wrong and a little strange but it’s their own lives and they chose to do it doesn’t mean you should call them rapists

Nah, it’s still a damn problem and the Black community deserves better. Shut ALL of that shit down, permanently. Maybe quit defending rapist havens.

They are rapists and I’m guessing you are, too, or you actively defend known rapists in your family/friend circle. Fuck all of you sick freaks.

Literally lol, like is everyone slow?? To ban frat PARTIES but not the root cause. It makes zero sense. Yes the parties are totally the issue and not the boys who join these frats + frat culture🙄 I also think it'd be easier to regulate “ no Greek life" rather than regulating greek life parties. Because we all know, they're still gonna party. I don’t understand why the school can’t just keep them from congregating like they normally do??

Because it’s easier to ignore the hives and squash the occasional wasp as long as you get your fuddy duddy frat bro daddy donations, apparently. It’s beyond repugnant and I’m sick of it.

assuming rapists only rape because they can’t control their carnal instincts, that they’re animalistic in nature & less intelligent/civilized than the rest of us fails to hold these people accountable. rape is often more about control and domination than it is sexual desire (although that is a factor). rapists are able to get through that value-judgement process the same way we do. what makes them truly despicable is that they actively choose to hurt someone out of their conscious free will

stripping away the protection they feel from fraternities will decrease assaults and rapes for sure. Not entirely because evil men will do evil things whenever they want, but it will help
