my uncle works at apple, why do they act like it’s the cia 😭 he signed several ndas & wasn’t allowed to say what he working on til recently (including to family). they use code words for everything, he doesn’t know what other ppl are working on, etc.

My bf has been applying to a lot of companies that would require high level security clearance and I made him promise to tell me things bc I’m too nosy 😭

that is an industry standard for every major engineering or technology company. a lot of their worth is contingent upon their edge over competitors to the extent that they also hire people to try to breach each other as well. it’s like mini military intelligence for nerds.

my dad works at a tech company and i interned at a couple that have proprietary software that you’re not allowed to talk about, but so far i have not heard of any as intense about it as apple 😭 like it’s operating at the same level of secrecy as some of those government/military companies

like i get wanting to surprise the public with cool new features and not wanting their competitors to copy what they’re working on, but like the fact that everyone within the company is on a need to know basis and only knows about what they’re working on is so wild 😭 ig maybe bc it’s sorta common in tech for ppl to hop between companies, it’s a fail safe if someone decides to leave and work for their competitors?

yup you’re allowed to leave at any time and work for whoever you want. if you’re high enough up the ladder sometimes there’s laws in place that don’t let you actually work on stuff for a certain amount of time if you go to a competitor. you still can’t reveal proprietary things outright but yk there are ways to suggest lol

usually if you’re high enough up there’s something in your contract that prevents you from working for a competitor for x number of years, but they’d much rather let you do it and sue you out of house and home once you breach than not attract competitive candidates.

unless it’s military, then you get shipped off to prison instead of sued

i don’t think apple’s level of secrecy is standard, lots of people in my family including my uncle himself have worked at similar companies that are less intense about it. though ofc it makes sense that what they are working on should remain largely private, apple keeps a lot more secrets from people who are working within the company than others i have heard about

i know people who work at apple as well as other similar companies and am an adjunct professor of electrical computer engineering, so we’ll just have to agree to disagree. it’s more a 2025 thing than an apple thing; he probably either worked at lower profile companies or contractors OR worked at similar companies before the current standards were in place.

apple has long been called the most secretive company in the world so i don’t think it’s a 2025 thing but sure we can agree to disagree. people i know at meta, amazon, and google are also not allowed to share certain aspects of their work but again it didn’t seem the same level to me.

anyone calling apple the most secretive tech company in the world has never worked for intel or anything remotely related to tech the government uses.

i’m not arguing that it is lol, just that it has been called that - if you google, you’ll see. i’m just saying i don’t think it’s industry standard 🤷‍♀️

it probably gets the most publicity for it because of its cult-like following and how much money it sinks into pr. it may also be that everyone signs similar agreements, but apple employees have the most emotional loyalty to their employers.
