Is to crazy for me to say that I think that men should be banned from gynecology? Like tell me why I go to the gyno and the first medical professional to walk into the room is a man. Like wtf no get the fuck out.

i was with op originally but this gave me a new perspective. i do however still think there should be more steps involved and investigation before a man becomes a gyno because truly what would they want want get out of working in that kind of field. like think about it

It’s honestly just a reflection of OPs ignorance and lack of nuance in perspective. Doctors do not sexualize body parts they work with every day. They are trained not to, and most naturally treat the job with respect and professionalism. Of course, there are exceptions, but those exceptions are not limited to any gender and are not specific to any particular area/s of the medical field. OP may prefer a female gyno and that’s cool, but her statement should’ve stopped there

I think both sides have reasonable points, when I go into a space like that I only except women because that’s what helps me feel comfortable, and that’s what op meant, most women feel the same. Your opinion isn’t very common which is why many people don’t take it into consideration, nonetheless your experience is completely valid, and I hope you’re able to feel accommodated.

Also like, every male OBGYN will have a female in the room to chaperone them. Could be a nurse or a student or an MA but there will always be a female in the room

To add some context: I am a med student and you don’t get a lot of say in what kind of doctor you want to be. You could apply to 10 residencies but only match with OB/GYN. I had a male gyno, he wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon but only matched with OB/GYN. He ended up loving it because it’s the “only happy reason someone would go to a hospital is to have a baby” hes a wonderful doctor and after my appointment my perspective changed

Also a lot of woman get sa’d by men so they’re probably quick to think in that direction but to be a advocate you have to be an advocate for all woman and sa victims not just the ones you think are a perfect victim which doesn’t exist. I can’t imagine walking in a room and seeing a man and woman who were sa’d by woman or their mom which happens more than you think would feel the same way about a woman.

My gyno is a gyno because uterine cancer killed his grandmother, his mother, and his sister was diagnosed with it and had to get a hysterectomy. I’m not gonna question why people who want to help people choose a specific field to help people in. To me that assumes ill intent automatically which is just gender essentialism

it’s not just the uterus it’s the entire genital area, they can see everything and many women have been sexually assaulted by their gynos during a procedure or just during a routine exam. I don’t think an entire gender should be banned though, that goes against the entire ideals of feminism.

Exactly. I just commented something similar on the original post. If the med school and gyno office paid attention in interviews and to the personal statement of the individual wanting to be a gyno, there’s a good chance that the individual, regardless of sex or gender, is respectful, empathetic, and educated, rather than a creep. Sadly some weirdos do get by and that’s why it’s totally within our rights to select whether we want a male or female gyno.

Yep. It’s an evidently objective statement that women suffer from SA at the hands of men at higher rates than they do women, and I don’t think anyone is refuting that. Look, if you feel that way good on you, I feel that way about men too. That doesn’t mean I think it is at all a good idea to say that certain groups of people need to inherently be more scrutinized more when it comes to employment because they statistically are more likely to do XYZ. Way to change the subject. Because you didn’t read the comment right. I don’t think it’s inherently wrong to be more comfortable with a female doctor, and she’s saying that it is. She’s saying that the assumption that just because a doctor is male that he wants to sexually assault you is a strange way to believe. Like I said, my experience with SA have had women as perpetrators. If I operated my life in a way where I assumed that every woman wants to assault me, that’d be seen as ridiculous.

This is exactly how I feel also, I’m in a womans right group at my university and I am the only woman of color in the group and this is a constant thing I have to push back on when the white women have ideas like this. If this were to become a precedent it would be a win for the fascists in our country so they can start using it on people of color. They pretty much already do on the basis of assuming any Hispanic person in the country is an immigrant and sending ICE after them.

i think that as a woman you have the right to choose what kind of doctor you’re comfortable with, but imo it’s gender essentialism (not to mention illegal discrimination) to make it harder for men to enter the field. reproductive organs are simply another part of the body that needs care and there are certainly legitimate reasons why a man would want to do that

I’m a med student too but you do get a say in what you specialize in. He was interested in OBGYN and that’s why he applied for it and ultimately got it. He wasn’t forced into OBGYN. If he didn’t want to do OBGYN at all he wouldn’t have applied for it
